What is the F.L.A.M.E. Method™?
The F.L.A.M.E. Method™ is Boiler Academy's structured approach to boiler fault diagnosis. It provides a clear, five-step framework that engineers and apprentices can use to analyse boiler problems systematically — reducing guesswork and improving confidence on the job.
Each step of the method builds on the last, guiding the engineer from initial fault identification through to safe, evidence-based repair and testing. The F.L.A.M.E. Method™ is used throughout all Boiler Academy training pathways.
Step 1
Fault Identification
The first step is to gather all available information about the fault before touching any components. This includes the customer complaint, observable symptoms, boiler fault codes or error displays, safety signals and how the system is currently behaving.
What to identify in Step 1:
- The customer complaint in their own words
- Observable symptoms (no heat, no hot water, noise, pressure issues)
- Boiler fault codes or error indicators
- Safety concerns (gas smell, CO alarm, unusual sounds)
- System behaviour patterns (intermittent, constant, weather-related)
What to analyse in Step 2:
- The full boiler ignition and operating sequence
- Heating demand signals from programmer and thermostat
- Controls logic, wiring pathways and zone valve signals
- System pressure, flow rate and circulation behaviour
- Whether the fault is in the boiler, controls or system
Step 2
Logical Analysis
Before testing any components, analyse the full boiler sequence, heating demand, controls logic and system behaviour. This step is about understanding what should be happening, then identifying where the system is deviating from expected operation.
Step 3
Assessment of Components
Having identified the fault and analysed the system logic, now systematically test and assess the relevant components. This is where diagnostic tools such as multimeters, pressure gauges and gas analysers are used to measure and assess performance.
Components to assess in Step 3:
- Sensors (flow, return, DHW, flue, condensate)
- Pumps, fans, diverter valves and zone valves
- Electrodes, ionisation and ignition components
- PCB and control board signals and outputs
- Wiring continuity, controls and external thermostats
Repair planning in Step 4:
- Confirm the most likely root cause based on evidence
- Identify the safest and most logical repair sequence
- Consider part availability and cost-effectiveness
- Plan communication with the customer before starting work
- Prepare Gas Safe documentation if required
Step 4
Methodical Repair Planning
Based on the evidence gathered in the previous steps, plan the safest, most logical and cost-effective repair approach. This step ensures the repair is well-considered rather than reactive, reducing the risk of unnecessary parts replacement or incomplete fixes.
Step 5
Execution & Testing
Carry out the planned repair safely and methodically. After completing the work, test the full system operation, confirm safe operation, document all findings accurately and communicate the results clearly to the customer.

No Heating, but Hot Water Working
How the F.L.A.M.E. Method™ guides the diagnostic process step by step.
Fault ID
No heating demand satisfied. Hot water works. No fault code displayed. Programmer shows heating demand active.
Logic
Boiler fires for DHW. System controls logic — zone valve, room thermostat signal and programmer all need checking for heating circuit.
Assess
Test room thermostat, check zone valve end switch, test continuity in heating circuit wiring, check programmer output.
Plan
Evidence points to failed zone valve motor/end switch. Plan replacement, confirm part, advise customer before starting work.
Execute
Replace zone valve head. Test heating circuit. Confirm full operation. Document and advise customer on outcome.
